How to Reset Your Breaker – Fall 2024
November 1, 2024
One of the most common culprits of power loss in condos is a tripped breaker panel. The number one cause of a tripped breaker is an overloaded circuit, often due to multiple power drawing sources connected at once. The breaker will trip when it senses an abnormal power draw, and shuts off the flow of electricity for safety reasons. By shutting off the circuit, the panel protects from overheating, and the dangers of electrical fire.
Before reaching out to your landlord, or property manager, please ensure that you attempt to reset the breaker and restore power to any appliance or device that may be non-functional.
To properly reset your breaker panel, please follow the below instructions:
Step 1:
Identify the tripped breaker: Look for a breaker in the electrical panel that has shifted to the “off” position or is in the middle the “on” and “off” positions. If your panel does not have on/off labels, look for the switch that it facing the opposite direction from the others.
Step 2:
Turn off all appliances: Before resetting the breaker, turn off all appliances and electronic devices that are currently in use to avoid a power surge. Consider unplugging any resource heavy items, such as personal heaters, fans, televisions, or video game systems
Step 3:
Switch off the breaker: Move the tripped breaker to the “off” position by pushing it to the “off” side until you hear a click as the switch snaps into place.
Step 4:
Wait a few seconds: Give the breaker a few seconds to cool down before attempting to reset it.
Step 5:
Reset the breaker: Move the breaker back to the “on” position by pushing it firmly to the “on” side until you hear a click.
Test the breaker: Turn on one of the appliances or electronic devices that you turned off in step 2 to make sure the breaker is functioning properly.
Please keep in mind that if you find yourself resetting your breaker panel regularly, or if the breaker trips immediately after reset, it may indicate a greater underlying issue that requires attention.
Some safety tips to keep in mind:
- Do not use any tools – your breaker panel is fully accessible by hand, and should not be altered or tampered with further
- Do not touch the electric meter
- Ensure your hands are dry, and there is no water present when accessing the panel
- If the breaker panel is making any unusual noises, or feels warm, do not touch the switches. Reach out to your landlord so they can contact a professional
It is important to never force a breaker into a certain position, as this can damage the panel. Reach out to your landlord to ensure any electrical needs in the unit are addressed by a qualified professional.
Thank you for your cooperation.
