Thermostat Maintenance: When to Change Your Batteries – Fall 2024

November 11, 2024

We rely on our HVAC systems to regulate the temperature inside condo units as the seasons change. If the digital display of your thermostat has gone blank, or you are getting the appropriate error code, then you may need to replace the batteries. Newer thermostat models may indicate “low battery”, or make a beeping noise when the batteries need to be replaced.

A typical battery-powered dial, switch dial, or touch-screen programmable thermostat is going to take regular AA, or AAA batteries. It may also take a 3V lithium battery, or 9-volt battery. You can find out which type of battery your thermostat uses by opening up the battery compartment.

It is important to change your thermostat batteries at least once a year, or on a scheduled date. We recommend the first day of the fall season, to ensure your thermostat is working properly as the weather gets colder. At the same time, consider scheduling a battery replacement for your smoke/carbon monoxide detector. (Please note that your unit might feature a detector that is hardwired into the unit’s electricity. If this is the case, you will need to reach out to your landlord, or onsite management, to schedule a battery change).

You will likely need a small screwdriver set, along with a fresh set of batteries.

Step 1
First, turn off the thermostat.

Step 2
Gently slide the thermostat housing up and off the wall mount plate. If it doesn’t slide up/off or up/back-tilt, you can probably just pull it off.

Step 3
Look at the back of the thermostat to see what kind of battery is required. You may need a screwdriver to carefully pry the battery out or to remove the cover.

Step 4
Note the direction of the plus and negative signs for AA and AAA batteries, and insert the new batteries in the appropriate slot.

Step 5
Gently wiggle the mount plate to see if it’s still firmly mounted to the wall. If it’s loose, tighten it as needed with a screwdriver.

Step 6
Replace the battery cover, and re-insert the thermostat back on the mount plate. Wait for the thermostat to power back on, and test it by changing the temperature, or fan speed.

Replacing the battery in a thermostat is a simple chore, and should not require the assistance of a contractor or handyman. If you have any questions about this process, please reach out to your landlord for more information.

Thank you for your cooperation.
